Westland Sport and Community Centre – Westland High School

Current StadiumWestland High School’s gymnasium is the main indoor sporting facility in Hokitika. The gymnasium was built in 1967 and extended in 1984. It has been rated at 34% NBS and is in a deteriorating condition. The school hall, administration block and neighbouring classrooms burnt down in February. The opportunity exists to look at the inter-relationship of a number of the school facilities and the integration of education and community needs in the upgrading and rebuilding of these assets.

The vision for this project is: To develop a sustainable, vibrant, state of the art, multipurpose centre, where the Westland Community will thrive by extending the physical, social, recreational and economic activities for future generations.

The feasibility study will explore options for development of the school’s gymnasium, netball courts, field options, hall and related multi-use classrooms together with a new Maori cultural centre for the school. Meeting and conference facilities, a community youth space and a cycling hub are also included in the scope of the study Pending the result of a report on the Hokitika Swimming Pool that is currently with the Westland District Council, the study may also incorporate an analysis of the future options for the swimming pool to be located on the site to serve both education and community needs. The Westland District Council has already approved $1.5M from their MDI funding for the project. The New Zealand Lottery Grants Board has approved $20,000 towards the feasibility study.
